Fukara Irrigation "Irrigation Tunnel" was recognized as a Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) Recommended Civil Engineering Heritage Site.(in Japanese history)
Official Website of Susono City, Shizuoka Prefecture)
It was a major project in the history of tunnels, as the project owner, a group of engineers, and the farmers who were to dig the tunnels worked together to meet the challenge.
Technology for Pioneering Water Tunnels - Excavation Technology as Seen by Modern Engineers
The excavation geology included andesite, which was considered difficult to excavate with a chisel due to its hardness. The tunnel was to be 1280 m long, with a 10 m difference in elevation, and was to be a double-ended underground joint. The surveying technology that made this possible was available.
We have been working with local collaborators to investigate the existing tunnel alignment and the holes (breath holes) that have been discovered above ground.
It is through that water! Fukara water
The record of our research on Fukara Irrigation, a civil engineering heritage site, has been compiled into an e-book.
